I'm about to do an Texas to SC ( stopping in Spartanburg for a New Owner's Track Day). That said, I really hope they'll start doing it soon as long as they don't screw it up. I thought they only do OTA map updates and Connected Drive Service updates.

I didn't think to check if the several "regions" I passed through were updated. I haven't seen any BMW literature talking about over the air software updates. How could you tell that your "not normal" region updated? I just finished a Texas (normal region) to California trip.

I think it was after about 8 hours or so in the region so as long as you aren't planning on going on fairly new roads as soon as you get into a region I would think the Nav should be fine. Mine updated while traveling through various regions including Canada. When you get outside of some metro areas, the data rates can be quite slow, so not sure how fast that will happen, either.

How can i upgrade to idrive 7, will my local bmw dealer do it for me If not, what are the consequences of going to a 3rd party and asking them to install a custom software/idrive 7 (i like the pink ambient lighting option) And how much will that cost. I'm hoping that the embedded SIM card will allow that to happen. I recently bought a 2018 530i xdrive and I believe it is still running on idrive 6. I have a trip coming up where I may cross three regions, and am not sure how it will respond. I would prefer that the maps updated the entire area rather than just a region. Paladin1, Can you be specific about the URL you found the Region 1-13 for US maps on CONNECTED DRIVE? I can't find that anywhere using my Mac Safari browser. I do see it on the BMW UK site, just not on the site for us poor Colonials.

My Connected Drive site only has options for automatic updates for regions 1-13 (and you can only select one) - no download software or other updates.

I guess that in the USA the Download Manager will download the full USA mapping update.Īs far as I can tell, this is not available in the US. The OTA update in the car would obviously struggle with 28Gb, so only does the local area/country/state. You then put the update on a USB stick on your PC, then plug the USB stick into the car. I have just checked and map Europe 2020-4 (I am in the UK) is now available and a mere 28Gb download, taking less than 2 hours. This app can be found hiding on the BMW website - I forget where.

Swapping over one or two modules to make it suddenly have SP18 idrive 7.You can update all the maps in you car via the "BMW Download Manager" app on a PC (or mac?). It's not as simple as you are thinking it is. Likely has other different modules too like the BDC. I won't need to do the tweaking though as I am already in purgatory with iDrive 7 "Lite" on MY2020 in my 530e. The switch isn't needed on iDrive 7 cars with the SP18 hardware (like the LCI G30), but it is needed on cars with SP15 hardware (from 2017-2020). I still need to have my BMW dealer install the valet mode switch in my car because BMW accidentally deleted the switch and wiring in the factory for the first 6 months or so of the MY2020 production. The lack of anything else is why we don't get any other iDrive 7 features and have no Remote Software Updates, valet mode, Digital Key, lane information in navigation display, etc. It is something along the lines of head unit and RAM module and nothing else. I won't claim to know the full extent of the hardware changes needed, but I do know that the iDrive 7 version on MY2020 5-Series and X3 cars is not the full set of hardware iDrive 7 changes. But if you do try be sure to make a thread. That's really not how it works nor how easy it will be to "upgrade" to idrive 7 from idrive 6. I expect we'll see this stuff happening in a few years. Since the MY2020 cars are basically iDrive 6 cars with the iDrive 7 head unit in theory an iDrive 6 car can actually be upgraded aftermarket to iDrive 7, but the iDrive 7 cars are too new to serve as donor cars to harvest from. It is like they felt like they had way way too many iDrive 7 head units and just needed to desperately get rid of them right before the LCI on the 5 and X3. Yeah they really fucked us over on MY2020 for no reason I can figure out. and i cant buy it in my one model year old car. I wish they would just sell us what is probably one module somewhere + a backup battery to give us full ID7.Įspecially insulting now that BMW is now selling remote start as a connected drive upgrade feature. Yeah - I have a 2020 G01 M40i and I feel like i was scammed by BMW too.
